Sam Hancock and private coaching client, Michael Claessens, won the Lotus 6 Hour race outright at Brands Hatch on Saturday 9 November, having led the majority of the wet race from a pole position set earlier in the day by Hancock.
Most extraordinarily, this was only Claessens' second ever race meeting, the young Dutchman making his debut just two weeks earlier after a brace of private coaching days with Hancock.
Starting in a Lotus Elise at Snetterton, Hancock felt his novice pupil showed the necessary talent to graduate immediately to the very quick Lotus 2-Eleven for the Brands Hatch Enduro.
Claessens rewarded his coach's faith and, despite dropping to third place in the mid stages, showed remarkable pace and consistency to stay close to the leaders and take advantage when they encountered problems. His mistake-free run aboard the flawless Track Club prepared car, in dark and wet conditions, covered a full fifty percent of the race distance, making the victory taste even sweeter.
The duo are now reviewing options for next season while continuing Claessens' training throughout the winter.
